Cultured Couple of Days

Starting on Thursday morning began a series of very culturally diverse and engaging events that we all held on Drake University’s campus.

Yesterday morning, New York Mayor Bill De Blasio spoke on the topic of economic inequality in the United States. His powerful speech was very thought provoking, more details will be updated later.

Last night I had the honor to attend Senator Tom Harkin (ret.) first speaking engagement as a private citizen in 40 years. The topic of his lecture was “How To Make Human Rights Part of your Everyday Life.” The lecture covered various topics from the ADA to child labor in chocolate fields in Africa, to a variety of other major initiatives of the former Senator’s including education and accessible healthcare.

Today I had the distinct privilege to serve as Drake graduate Daniel Van Sant’s speaker assistant for the 2015 Herb and Karen Baum Symposium on Ethics and the Professions. His breakout session focused on creating inclusive programs and working environments for people with disabilities was very interesting.
